Welcome back to this new chapter in the history of the Mansion House, and to our new bookable guided tours. We advise you to read the following information prior to visiting us.
As lockdown has eased, we understand that there will be questions and concerns ahead of your visit. At all times, your safety is our priority, and we want to make sure you can arrive for your visit confident in our team, the house, and everything in between. We’ve put a number of steps in place to ensure you are safe during your visit, and below you’ll find an overview of what you can expect before, during and after your visit.
Our safety and hygiene standards have been awarded the Visit England industry standard, Good to Go, so you can be reassured that we adhere to Government and industry guidelines at all stages of your experience.
We will be updating this page regularly, and please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any additional concerns or requirements.
From the date of our reopening on Wednesday 22nd July, we are running a series of pre-booked tours, which require advance bookings. We will not be accepting any walk-in visits at this time. All visitors will be required to wear face coverings to allow us to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Please note that if you or anyone in your group has any signs or symptoms of Covid-19, including – but not limited to – a temperature, a new and persistent cough, or a loss of taste or smell, then please follow NHS guidance and stay at home.
From July 22nd, we are running five tours throughout the day, from Wednesday to Sunday. These tours will include a series of special interest tours, as well as something for little ones, so click here to see what's on offer before you book. You will need to book your ticket in advance, which can be purchased here.
To help us manage visitor numbers and ensure time for cleaning, we ask that you select a timeslot on your chosen date, which will be clear during the booking process.
Please note: There are a number of ticket options available, and York Passes are accepted. Visit our Admissions page for more information.
During the booking process, you will be asked to fill in some personal information so we can process your order. Our Privacy Notice outlines how we use and store that data.
REFUNDS AND RESCHEDULING
We understand that these are difficult times and situations can quickly become out of your control. To allow us to be flexible and to open the tours up to others, we ask you to let us know as soon as possible if you’re not able to attend your allotted timeslot. You can request a cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour.
To maintain social distancing and to allow us to create the best experience for everyone, we are restricting our tour groups to six people.
Owing to the size and space within the house, it is possible to easily maintain the advised social distancing, so we are not placing family or bubble restrictions on tours; they are open to families, couples, individuals and households. At least a one metre distance will be observed and monitored at all times, and face coverings must be worn.
VISITING WITH CHILDREN
We welcome families and children on all our tours, and our House Team have created some exciting, child-friendly additions to our tours, so if we see a booking with little ones, we will make sure there is plenty to keep them entertained.
PRIVATE TOURS AND LARGE GROUPS
If you have a specific interest or would prefer a tour for a larger group, contact firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know what you have in mind – we have a range of options available and are happy to work with you to create something new.
Please note, that with current Government guidelines, we are only able to admit two households together for larger tours, or those who are within the same ‘bubble’. We will review this regularly, and each request will be dealt with on an individual basis.
PPE: MASKS AND GLOVES
Following government and industry guidance, we will be asking all visitors to please wear a face covering. If you do not have one, we will have some disposable options available on site. As well as this, you are very welcome to wear any additional PPE that makes you feel most comfortable.
QUEUING AND ADMISSION
When you arrive at York Mansion House, you will see clear signage on the railings, on the steps, and markers on the pavement that will show you where to wait ahead of your tour timeslot. This will be to the left as you look at the house.
Please arrive with your ticket ready - printed or digital is absolutely fine, and we will take your order number as you enter. At your tour start time, your tour guide will welcome you into the house and give you clear directions where to go, as well as ensuring distancing is maintained.
Please note: the previous tour will end 15 minutes before your timeslot begins to allow a thorough clean of all areas. The previous tour will exit through the same door you will enter through, so be aware that you may have people pass you at the bottom of the steps.
You will be welcomed into the house by our wonderful Front of House team; Isaac, Laura and Georgia.
The tour will last 45 minutes, and will take you through all four floors of the house. There will be places to sit in each room should you need to, and there is lift access throughout (see the Accessibility information below). You will be guided during the tour, and while there are interactives in each room, these will be operated by the tour guide if they are needed and accompanied by an adjacent cleaning station.
STAFF AND PPE
All staff members will be wearing visors, which belong exclusively to them. With hand sanitiser throughout the house and in staff areas, each member of the team will ensure their hands are cleaned regularly, as well as keeping staff areas and toilets separate and managed with distancing within the team.
For any object handling, each tour guide will use their own gloves and ensure there is no public handling.
SAFETY AND HYGIENE
As you move through the house, you will find plenty of sanitising points in each room. This includes cleaning areas next to each interactive, which will require touching. There will be no need to touch these as part of the tour, but they will be available if you wish.
After each tour, all areas and toilets will be thoroughly cleaned before the next group enters.
We have accessible toilets throughout the building – one on the ground floor next to the Gift Shop, and two on the first floor. You are free to use these during your visit, confident in the fact that each toilet has been cleaned after each tour.
Following our restoration, we’re pleased to be able to welcome everyone without restriction, with an off-street ramped entrance, and lifts throughout the house.
If you think you’ll require assistance during your visit, please contact us ahead of time so we can ensure you’re welcomed correctly. Should you need to use the lift, we ask that only one person – or two people, if one is a carer – uses it at once. A member of staff will welcome you and show you exactly where to go and how to use the lift, and the tour guide will assist you as the tour progresses.
Our gift shop will be open during your visit, and there will be a number of safety measures in place. These will include plastic screens, an item handling area and staggered queuing, all of which will be guided by a staff member.
Please note: We will not be accepting cash, but all cards and contactless payments are welcome.
For all existing bookings in the coming months, please be reassured that we are monitoring Government guidelines closely to assess what we anticipate to be possible. If you haven’t heard from us already, we will be in touch in due course, otherwise please contact email@example.com with any concerns you might have.
In line with Government guidelines, we are pleased to be able to offer couples the opportunity to use the Mansion House for their wedding ceremony, in partnership with York Register Office. Please visit our Wedding Ceremonies page for more. (Information correct for July 2020).
